Next up in our series of “Who Built It?” blogs is Project Manager, Randy Hill. He is the Project Manager at ChevalCotswoldPlaza MidwoodSpringfield, and our scattered lot homes. Randy takes a home from clearing the lot to the final walk-through. He keeps in touch with clients throughout the process, talking to them on the phone, or emailing them progress reports and photos. He manages everyone who is involved in building the home, from construction to contracts to closings. Since he handles mostly larger custom homes, he works with about five to 10 homeowners at once.

  • What sparked your interest in home building?

I started out in apartment maintenance and did that for 10 years until I got burned out. Then, I started doing warranty work for Centex.  I did well, and was promoted to Superintendent. Overall, I’ve been doing this kind of work for 25 years.

I interviewed with David Weekley Homes, but didn’t get the job. Instead, they passed my name on to [Evans Coghill co-owner] Chris [Folk]. I think it’s been a good fit… April 1st was my 2-year anniversary!  I like custom building so much. It’s definitely more up my alley.

  • What is your favorite / most satisfying part of your job?

The flexibility. When I was working for other builders, people were always on your back.  Here they give me more freedom and flexibility. They trust me.  I always want my clients to be super happy.  The best part is when we do the final walk-through and they go “WOW!”.

  • What are the biggest changes you’ve seen over the years?

The structural components. The way houses are built. And the inspection process. Houses are built so much tighter and energy efficient today, so the inspection process has changed drastically. When I started out, there were no cell phones. There was a fax machine and a trailer.  Now, my truck is my office. I can do everything from my phone – pull up plans, send emails, return calls.

  • What do you do on a day off?

When I have time, I work on projects around the house. I also play guitar. And my wife and I like to hang out at our neighbor’s pool. I love Charleston – the food, the beaches, the history. We try to get there at least once a year, since it’s only three hours away.

  • What else do you want us to know?

I really enjoy what I do.  I like interacting with my subcontractors and my clients.  ECH’s owners [Chris & Alan] are great people.  And Ed [Boyd] and I get along like two peas in a pod. It’s so much fun. Evans Coghill is a great company to work for.  It is the most enjoyable company I’ve ever worked for.
